Published in 2022 by Tokyo Sogensha, this collection contains 9 short stories by Udaru Oshita (大下宇陀児), all published before the war.
1896−1966
Udaru Oshita worked for the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. When Saburo Koga, who was also working for the Ministry at the time, started writing detective fiction, Udaru Oshita did the same.
He made his literary debut with the novel 金口の巻煙草 which was published in 1925 in the magazine 新青年. He quit his job at the Ministry in 1928.
He soon became known as one of the three major writers of detective fiction together with Edogawa Rampo and Saburo Koga.
As Saburo Koga defines the detective novel as being restricted to the pure 本格 genre, Udaru Oshita defends the 変格 genre.
After the War, Udaru Oshita wins the Mystery Writers of Japan Award with 石の下の記録 in 1951 and becomes the President of the MWJ Association the following year.
