I really love Kyotaro Nishimura’s train series: the nostalgia of old sleeper trains coupled with an engrossing mystery…
1930-2022
After his literary debut in 1963, Kyotaro Nishimura wrote mystery novels in different sub-genres, from espionage to social mystery novels. In 1978, the publication of 寝台特急殺人事件 popularised the travel mystery genre (トラベルミステリー). This novel is the first of the long railway series featuring Chief Inspector Totsugawa (十津川警部). Kyotaro Nishimura won several literary prizes like the Edogawa Prize in 1965 and the Mystery Writers of Japan Award in 1981.

An engrossing murder mystery revolving around the sleeper train linking Aomori and Ueno stations. Also one of my favourite winners of the Mystery Writers of Japan Award.
